Hospitality graduates from Switzerland are widely acclaimed for their capability to work in the ever-changing, multicultural industry, says Tracy Chan, director of Swiss Education Group Hong Kong, Macau and PRC.
Founded in 1982, Swiss Education Group offers a comprehensive range of programs in five schools, specializing in different pillars of the hospitality industry. A case in point is Culinary Arts Academy Switzerland, which provides intensive training in French and Italian cuisines.
The group’s partnership with various key players constantly attracts aspiring hoteliers. Apart from hotels, it works with renowned culinary institutions, fine watchmakers and banks to cater to different academic needs.

Every March and October, the group holds the International Recruitment Forum which involves over 100 international companies. Students are likely to land both internship and full-time offers in airlines, cruises, theme parks and travel corporations. Some have been employed by multinational hotels, such as the Ritz-Carlton, Hyatt and Shangri-la.
Chan said some graduates became restaurateurs and wine merchants, as the skills acquired are transferable to different areas.

Among the five schools, Swiss Hotel Management School is offering a new master’s program in international business. The 10-month fast track curriculum combines academic study with a paid internship, and aims to nurture professional hoteliers.
In the first five months, students will be introduced to marketing, food and beverage, front office, rooms division, events and banqueting services, as well as current trends in hospitality.
Strategic revenue management, in particular, will benefit students who have no prior experience in the industry, Chan said. Students can also opt for French or German courses to enhance their employability in Europe.
“It’s very important for students to know their area of interest,“ she emphasized. That was why excursions formed part of the curriculum.

Drawing on the school’s strong network with key players, students will attend lectures and workshops covering fine watchmaking, chocolate and wine tasting.
To prepare for the internship in the second semester, SHMS offers advice on students’ resume and interview skills. Students can apply for a position in Switzerland or overseas. Popular choices include Britain, Portugal, Thailand, Dubai and the Maldives.
“In pursuing a master’s degree, students should have a positive mind- set and aim to enhance their competitiveness,” said Chan. “Our graduates will be able to compete with hospitality graduates of local universities.”
Another focal point of the program is that there are more than 60 nationalities on the campus. Chan said Hong Kong students speak good English and are adaptable to new environments, both of which are the prerequisites for a seat in the hospitality industry.
“I always think that the industry is very special, and career prospects are promising. Employees are likely to be transferred to another country to manage a new hotel under the same hospitality group. “That’s synonymous with an internal promotion.”
To apply for the master’s degree, applicants should have a Bachelor degree in any discipline, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Ideal candidates should be flexible and independent. They must also attain an overall band score of 6.0 in the International English Language Testing System.
The program costs 23,450 Swiss francs (HK$184,739). Hong Kong and Macau students can apply for a scholarship, which is expected to cover up to 4,000 Swiss francs.
The degree will have two start dates: November 6 and 5 February. Each class comprises around 20 students. Application is open to university graduates worldwide, so Chan advised students to apply as early as they can. Final-year students can prepare their university transcripts to acquire a conditional offer in advance.
